10 Croatian Food Items That You Should Definitely Try Before You Die!

There is no one Croatian cuisine, and the food of the country is made up of food traditions of its various regions. While the cuisine has roots in ancient Slavic traditions, the most distinct differences are between the food of the mainland and the coastal areas. The mainland’s cuisine has a lot of influence from Turkey and Hungary, while the coastal areas have a distinctly Greek flavor and also Italian (especially Venetian) influence. Charcuterie is a unifying feature of all Croatian food.

Here is our pick of Croatian food facts with a special focus on the ones that you have got to try if you are in the region:

1. Black Risotto

Black Risotto croatia

This is locally called the crni rizot, and is usually made with cuttlefish or squid, which gives the traditional Italian dish an extreme seafood twist. A specialty of the Dalmatian region, it has olive oil, squid ink, red wine, as well as garlic. Parmesan is usually the cheese used, and just before the dish is done, a little squid ink turns the whole thing black, giving it the unusual appearance for which it is known. Beware, the dish will also turn your fingers and teeth black, but the delicacy is certainly the best food in Croatia!

2. Boskarin

Boskarin is a delicacy of the Istrian region of Croatia. They are white grey long cattle with long horns. Serving boskarin meat is only the business of prestigious restaurants – there are about forty places in Istria, one in Dubrovnik and ten in Zagreb where you can find it. It is usually served in local sauce with gnocchi or pasta and the meat is usually served as red salami or steak. There is also the boskarin tail soup that you must have. Boskarin counts as one of the best Croatian dishes there are out there.

3. Brodetto

Brodetto croatia

One of the mysterious Croatian food recipes for fish stew popular in the regions of Istria, Dalmatia, and Kvarner is the Brodetto. The dish was traditionally made by fishermen in the Italian coastal regions of Abruzzo and Marche. Also known as brudet, the dish is now very common throughout coastal Croatia. There is a lot of mixing of fish – fishermen usually threw in whatever they had caught throughout the day into the mix. Grouper and tuna are preferred, but ingredients are flexible and vary across regions.

4. Buzara

Buzara croatia

This rather simple dish made of mussels is common in the Adriatic coastal regions and is counted as Croatian culture food. The dish is traditionally made in white wine broth and olive oil, using garlic, and tomatoes. Buzara itself means broth, and the dish is curiously similar to the French delicacy of moules mariniere. Served with traditional white bread, the dish is also sprinkled in the end with breadcrumbs for both a pleasing appearance and taste.

5. Fritule

Fritule croatia

Although this traditional and extremely tasty Croatian dessert pastries owe their origin to coastal regions, they are very popular throughout the country. A common holiday preparation, they are shaped like donuts and fried in butter or oil and resemble the Italian holiday zeppole and the Dutch oliebollen. However, these differ in the ingredients that are put into the mix. Actually, the ingredients vary across regions and usually include egg yolk, lemon or orange rinds, rakija or rum, citrus zest, and other things. These extremely addictive Croatian sweets should be on your list of things to try.

6. Istrian Ham

Istrian Ham croatia

A traditional Istrian meal starts with a simple plate of prsut i sir, which is the Istrian ham and cheese. Eating these is like eating a piece of history literally, because not only is this a traditional meal dating back centuries but the ham is aged for 12 to 18 months depending on how the weather is. The Istrian ham is usually taken from the skinned leg of pork, dried with sea salt, and then several herbs such as pepper, garlic, bay leaves, and rosemary are added. The curing process is different from the Dalmatian ham, and Istrians use the colder Adriatic wind to cure their meat to make this traditional Croatian food.

7. Malvazija and Teran

Malvazija and Teran croatia

No description of any European cuisine is complete without a note on the local wine. Malvazija is an Istrian white wine that goes well with most Croatian food. It has the typical apricot and apple notes that make it a good drink that goes with Croatian seafood. Teran is the red wine that was once the signature of Croatian royalty. The best Teran can be found in Coronica, Kobola, and Cattunar, each near the grape vines from which the wine is made. The two Croatian drinks are a must-try Croatian sojourn!

8. Peka

Peka croatia

Ispod crepnje, literally under the bell, is a meat and vegetable dish that comes closest to typical Croatian food. It is cooked under terracotta or an iron lid and over burning embers. The meat may include anything from the exotic meat of octopus or veal to chicken or lamb, and it is the preparation that is known as peka. Before you get around to baking the meat (which is often cooked with a side of potatoes in addition to veggies) the whole thing is sprinkled with olive oil and herbs.

9. Truffles

Truffles croatia

Truffles have become quite a rage in global haute cuisine, but the Motovunian forests in Istria have been known for their truffles for quite some time. The black truffles or tartufi may not hold the same profile as their Italian cousins but they do have a stronger aroma. At the same time, they are less expensive than what you would find in France or Italy, the two places where truffles are held in high regard, and you can get Croatian meals spread over multiple courses with generous amounts of truffle at half the price as elsewhere in Europe.

10. Fuzi and Pljukanci

Fuzi and Pljukanci croatia

The Croatian traditional pasta is made by taking out 5-by-5 squares and wrapping them tightly around a wooden spoon handle. The quill shaped pasta is usually made with traditional truffle cream sauce, or they can be made in red sauced that have boskarin, beef, chicken, or even wild game. The best vegetarian Croatian food is the pljukanci, which is shaped quite very much like green beans. The chewy pasta is best served with cheesy gnocchi, or as the Croatians call it, njoki.

There is plenty of Indian food in Croatia, and there are numerous desi restaurants in Zagreb as well as the coastal cities. However, if you are traveling to the country, make time to taste some of this authentic Croatian food and drinks to get a true taste of the place. So, don’t wait anymore and plan your Croatian holiday now!

Places To Visit On A 7 Day Trip To Meghalaya

Going for an off-beat vacation with your partner often becomes a memorable idea. North-east India has some unexplored wonders that will give you instant wanderlust. Read about Dhilip’s 6 nights/7 days romantic trip to Meghalaya that goes beyond the conventional tourist destinations and digs up a gem for all travelers to consider.

Trip Cost: INR 41,000
Trip Duration: 6 nights/7 days
Agent Name: Chalo Hoppo Pvt Ltd
Month of Travel: April 2017
Inclusions: Transfers, accommodation, breakfast and dinner, and sightseeing
Exclusions: Lunch, airfare, and entry ticket

I got to know about TravelTriangle through the internet. For me as a traveler, there were many tour and travel companies with whom I could chose to travel, but I wanted to give TravelTriangle a chance to book my Meghalaya tour because of their option to customize a package and select an agent according to the best deal on offer.

lake view

meghalaya forest reserves

Initially, we were looking at a trip to Bhutan, but as the land packages offers didn’t suit us, we thought of exploring a relatively new destination within India. I went for Meghalaya trip plan because it is renowned for its greenery and unspoilt landscape. Since we were passing through Assam, we got our package modified to fit in a day at Kaziranga national park.

Breakfast and dinner was included in the package. The breakfast and dinner served at restaurants was really good. However, for one night the dinner in Cherrapunji was given very late and it was not nice. The only negative point of our trip. Rest of our Meghalaya tour plan was extremely great.

It was my first ever trip to North East and being with my wife, I wanted to explore every bit of it. Here is how I made my trip memorable.

Seeing the Rhinos in Kaziranga

Arrived in Guwahati from Chennai. Driver was present to pick us up. Slight bit of a language barrier was there as the driver didn’t know English and my hindi was pretty much broken. We traveled to Kaziranga, and during the journey we stopped at a Balaji temple, (a completely unexpected thing to see in Assam) took blessings from there, and proceeded towards the national park. Had lunch on the journey and arrived in Kaziranga late afternoon.

elephants roaming in the wild

kaziranga national park

We went for the Jeep safari in Kaziranga which was amazing. Saw the tiger, elephant, and the rhino! After a few hours we returned to the hotel which was literally in the wild. A property located in the middle of the dense forest, where the rooms were clean and comfortable.

Sikkim-Gangtok-Darjeeling Holiday Packages On TravelTriangle

Visit Sikkim and explore Yumthang valley, Tsomgo Lake, Gangtok, Nathula Pass, and Pelling. Experience peace and tranquility while exploring Buddhist monasteries, snow-capped mountains, and wildlife sanctuaries. Book packages inclusive of airport transfers, cab, resort, sightseeing, and meals.

Moving into the heart of Meghalaya

meghalaya lake scenery

blissful boating in meghalaya

We planned to do the elephant safari the next morning, but we were too tired to wake up so early. We checked out of the hotel, and then proceeded to Shillong. Our next hotel was in the middle of the city, as we wanted to explore Shillong with ease. The hotel was again really good, and the food was perfect. We did some sightseeing in the evening and then returned to the hotel in a few hours. We decided to go to bed early that night, as it was another day we spent in transit.

Visiting Asia’s cleanest village

The next day after breakfast, we traveled to Dawki. On our way to Dawki we made a few stops along the way. First up, we visited the elephant falls near shillong which was very scenic and beautiful.

clicking a pic at the bangladesh border

mawlynnong meghalaya

Next, we stopped at a village named Mawlynnong which has been given the title of Asia’s cleanest village. Even the Chalo Hoppo guys (our travel agency with whom we got the package) recommended that we make a short stop at this place. We roamed around the village, visited a thousand year-old tree root bridge. The experience at this village was really amazing, and it felt like a completely different place altogether.

After getting done here, we went onwards to Dawki which was supposed to be a short 12 km ride, but because of the terrible condition of the roads, it took us longer than usual. The driver took us to the India-Bangladesh border where we took a few snaps with the Indian and Bangladeshi soldiers.

relishing a boat cruise

Afterwards, we went to our resort to Langkawet- the retreat; our resort for the night. The place was amazing, as it gave us the feel of right in the middle of mother nature. If we opened our door, we could see a fantastic view of the mountains and green trees all around us. The place only had five beautifully crafted cottages and was owned by a very humble and inspirational guy named Victor. He welcomed us very nicely, talked to us during our entire stay, and told us a lot about how this place came into existence.

An interesting thing happened when I was booking our trip, John from Chalo Hoppo offered us this property, and when I researched about it, I didn’t wanna stay there. I was concerned about our security in this remote place. However, John managed to convinced me to take this resort and I’m thankful he changed my mind.

Cherrapunji- The wettest place in the world

cherrapunji waterfalls

sister falls in cherrapunji

We left for Cherrapunji in the morning. On the way, we stopped at multiple places where the view was excellent to enjoy and click pictures. We were lucky that there was no rain in Cherrapunji on that day. We got a good view of all the major waterfalls like seven sister falls, and other sightseeing places. We also went to Dainthlen falls, which for my wife, was her favorite. This added to our romantic Meghalaya travel experience.

Sightseeing in Shillong

places to visit in shillong

We woke up to heavy rain, just as we had last seen when we slept last night. After breakfast, we headed back to Shillong. On our return to Shillong, we chose a homestay. Having experienced four and five-star hotels previously in Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia, we wanted to give a break to being spoilt by luxury. We went to the Don Bosco museum, had lunch, and came back to the hotel.

Places to visit in Guwahati

guwahati sightseeing

crossing scenic peaks

We checked out of Shillong, and started our journey back to Guwahati. Once we arrived, we did some sightseeing by checking out the local markets, visiting the botanical gardens, and the planetarium. We checked into another guesthouse/homestay called Aashirwaad Guesthouse. The rooms were neat and clean, and the food served to us was delicious and reminded us of food cooked in our own home.

Farewell North-east

guwahati temple

cave watching in assam

The next day, we had breakfast and got transferred to the airport. We took our flight from Guwahati airport and straighaway flew back to Chennai.

A trip that I felt was more than what it was worth on TravelTriangle. All of the experiences were of top quality. The people of Meghalaya made my wife and I feel very welcome in an otherwise unknown destination for us. Certainly, after this trip we both made a promise to each other to explore more of North-east together.

the sun sets on a lovely trip

meghalaya scenic landscape

High Points:

  • The stay in Langkawet was really special.
  • The thousand year old Root bridge in Mawlynnong was incredible.
  • Home-stays in Guwahati and Shillong were really good. They felt like a cure to homesickness.

Meghalaya Travel Tips

  • Take rain jackets or raincoats along as rain as it can rain anytime in Meghalaya
  • Wear comfortable water proof shoes for sightseeing
  • The real beauty of lush green landscapes can be best witnessed during monsoon

The North-east has countless treasures worth visiting. Book your North East Tour package and witness the magic of mother nature!

Just try out as many as you can, you can never have a bad experience there. Explore the amazing world that is hidden beneath the emerald green waters. It’s a whole universe out there and the design is beyond magnificent.

There are costs involved and then there are gears and guides and everything else you are yet to be accustomed to. But when there is a will, there’s a way, and the best way to go for a cheaper snorkeling session is to choose wisely. Here is a list of places where you can go for snorkeling at a reasonable price.

1. Ao Mae Yai Bay, Koh Surin Nuea

best known snorkeling sites

Your best bid has to be these five spectacular islands that form the Surin Nuea that are best-known snorkeling sites in the Andaman Sea. It makes as one of the best places to snorkel in the seven seas. These islands fall under the protection of the Mu Koh Surin Marine National Park, hence, the beaches, as well as the surrounding coastlines, are pristine and crystal clear. The geography is blessed with an abundance of wildlife both in and out of the water.

You can go for snorkeling in any of the bays in the Surin Islands, they won’t disappoint you but the one that is most revered of all is Ao Mae Yai Bay which is located on the island of Koh Surin Nuea. This one offers one of the most striking varieties of corals and also happens to be the home to a diverse range of marine life and this includes the notorious clownfish (otherwise known as Nemo).

Planning your holiday in Thailand but confused about what to do? These Thailand travel stories help you find your best trip ever!

Real travel stories. Real stays. Handy tips to help you make the right choice.

2. Koh Nang Yuan, Koh Tao

formed of three different islands

The second one in the list is Koh Nang Yuan, formed out of three different islands, just off the northeast tip of Koh Tao. These islands are interconnected with an equally exotic gleaming white sandbar. Not to forget the intricate formation of the coral reefs in and around the island-shaped out of both soft and hard corals. The corallines are protected and relatively shallow. Hence, this makes for a perfect place to snorkel.

The island is however privately owned and you have to pay a very little amount of entrance fee compared to the treasure you get to explore.

3. Aow Leuk Beach, Koh Tao

magnificent snorkeling spot

Here, again, another magnificent snorkeling spot lies in Koh Tao, the Turtle Island otherwise known as Aow Leuk is the place. The location is on the southwest coast. Snorkelers go about diving grabbing their gears right off the beach and explore the amazing underwater biodiversity. The relatively shallow coral reefs are perfect for snorkeling and swimmers don’t need to wander far off the beach to explore the amazing wilderness lying beneath the crystal clear waters.

4. Maya Bay, Koh Phi Phi

entirely made of coral reefs

The name of this island shot to an international fame after Leonardo DiCaprio put Maya Bay on the maps featuring it in the film “The Beach”. Soon after, tourists all over the world started flocking around. The movie was filmed back in 1999 and since then the place has risen to all its glory becoming the snorkeling Mecca.

If you want to relive “The Beach” experience and check out the original spot that you have seen in the movie, and also snorkel, go for it. The beach is almost entirely made of coral reefs and the central stretch of beach spans around 200 meters. Surrounded by the towering cliffs from the three sides this place makes for a beautiful snorkeling site.

5. Ao Niang Bay, Koh Kradan

splendor of marine life

You can also try out the little island by southeast of Koh Lanta, called, “Koh Kradan.” It’s an absolute spectacle, wherever your eyes might wonder. Beneath the water, you can explore the splendor of marine life. The island falls under Hat Chao Mai National Park, spanning the 89-square miles. And that’s how the nearby coral reefs here are almost unhampered by the visitors. Experience silence in the serenity of the island, the place happens to be one of the quietest islands in Thailand.
If you want to be alone while you unwind, this is the place. Tourists are less and the vegetation is in abundance. You can get the absolute seclusion you desired while you were planning for a beach holiday. Ao Niang, situated on the southeast part of the island, also makes for the best bay for snorkelers with marine life and the coral galore.

6. Kata Beach, Phuket

focal point of your Phuket trip

If snorkeling is at the focal point of your Phuket trip then not Patong Beach, Kata Beach is your go-to place. The views underwater are exasperating. And what’s more, is that you don’t need to crack your bank for a dive certificate. The beach is made of pristine white sands and along the slope, the palm trees will evoke a calm and peace. It’s a smaller one spanning only a mile long yet it’s absolutely secluded and not raved by the touristic crowd.

7. Ko Lan

blissful snorkeling area

Venture out for one of the offshore islands near the sketchy shores of Pattaya. Here you will find an absolutely blissful snorkeling area in Koh Lan. The island has another name, Coral Island. The coral reefs here are the largest and arguably the most stunning one. You have to ride a little under an hour to get to the spot.

8. Koh Ngam Yai

simply amazing

The last but not the least is Koh Ngam Yai, the bay that is located off the quiet town of Chumphon. It’s generally treated as a stop-gap between two destinations and for the same reason the spot is secluded and makes for a peaceful snorkeling destination. Koh Ngam Yai, off Thung Wua Laen Beach, is a blissful destination with quiet and seclusion and the shallow waters are full of and colorful corals.

The pristine beaches of Thailand are calling out to you! Are you going to respond?
